Creating a Self-Love Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step-by-Step Guide to a Sustainable Self-Love Routine

Building a self-love routine can sometimes feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What should you include? Let's break down the process into simple, actionable steps that make self-love not just a practice but a daily ritual.

First, start with when.

Begin by identifying the times of day when you feel most in need of self-care. Is it in the morning when you wake up, or in the evening after a long day? Slotting self-love activities into these key moments can make your routine more natural and effective.
Some routines can be done weekly or monthly as well. I have a monthly “dating day with myself”, where I do whatever fits my mood that day. It could be a trip to a spa, nail salon, or just a quiet cafe. Most importantly, it’s an activity that improves your mood and makes you feel loved and cared for. It’s what you will do to “love yourself.”

Then, the activity.

There are a plethora of self-love activities that you can do! Which to choose? First, figure out if you prefer mental activities like meditation or physical activities like going for a walk.
Choose the one that is the easiest to do, has low effort, and fits your time. The last thing you want is to wake up to a routine you dread doing because of the high demand for effort or time constraints. Here’s a list of examples that you can choose from that is focused on self-love:

  • Morning Affirmations

  • Meditation (seated or walking)

  • Journal (writing gratitude or brain dump)

  • Yoga (gentle flow)

  • Outdoor walking (without devices)

  • Mindful skincare or breakfast

  • making a cup of coffee or tea

  • Reiki practice or other energy practices

Lastly, let’s put it together.

Here's how to craft your routine:

  1. Morning Affirmation: As you get up from your bed, saying: I love and approve myself, I choose to love myself today.”

  2. 5 minutes Meditation: A five-minute breathing exercise or guided meditation can reset your mood and boost your self-esteem.

  3. Outdoor walking: Stroll around your house and just be, observe, and feel the air around you. Take deep and slow breaths while you walk.

Have a few variations of this routine (like low, medium, or high-energy routines) depending on your energy levels that day. Focus on doing this routine consistently rather than perfectly, so adjust your routine accordingly.

Each step is a building block towards a stronger, more loving relationship with yourself. It's not about perfection; it's about progress and persistence.

It doesn’t have to be perfect or strict.

Creating a self-love routine doesn't have to be daunting. With these steps, you can begin to weave self-love into your daily life, turning what might feel like a chore into a joyful celebration of who you are.
